Tate Nurkin

Tate Nurkin is the founder of OTH Intelligence Group LLC, a company established in March 2018 to provide research, analysis, and advisory services focused on defence technology development, future military capabilities, and military and geopolitical competition.

He is a Non-Resident Senior Fellow with the Brent Scowcroft Centre for Strategy and Security at the Atlantic Council and with the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments (CSBA) and a partner with One Defense, an advisory firm that helps connect high-tech start-ups and non-traditional defence suppliers with defence and national security communities.

Before establishing OTH Intelligence Group in March 2018, Mr. Nurkin spent 12 years at Jane’s by IHS Markit, the global leader in the provision of open-source intelligence on defence and security issues. From 2012 until his departure in 2018 Mr. Nurkin was a member of the Jane’s operational leadership team responsible for overseeing Jane’s business operations.

Substantively, Mr. Nurkin’s research and analysis has a particularly strong focus on the future of military capabilities and conflict, global defence industry issues, alternative futures analysis, and Indo-Pacific security. He also has 25 years of experience in the design and delivery of scenario planning exercises and wargames.
Recently published monographs / reports have included The Five Revolutions: Examining Defence Innovation in the Indo-Pacific; US-Japan Technological Collaboration; Candle in the Dark: A US National Security Strategy for AI, Eye to Eye in AI: Developing Artificial Intelligence for National Security and Defence, and Power Projection: Accelerating Electrification of the US Military Ground Vehicles. His analysis has also appeared in CNN, Deutsche Welle, Janes Intelligence Review, Janes Defense Weekly, Defense News, Breaking Defense, and Space News, among other publications.

Prior to his work for Jane’s, he worked for the Modelling, Simulation, Wargaming and Analysis Group of Booz Allen Hamilton; and the Strategic Assessment Centre of Science Application International Corporation and Joint Management Services, a small firm based in Atlanta, GA that assesses defence technology development and geopolitical competitions. He holds a Master of Science in International Affairs from the Sam Nunn School of international affairs at Georgia Tech (1999) and a Bachelor of Arts in history and political science from Duke University (1994).
